Masters in Business, Technology and English

From The School of Real Life Experience

Early in my career, I was often discarded as a candidate for positions I desired because I didn’t have piece of paper certifying that I have a brain and know how to use it (a.k.a. college diploma BA/BS or above).

I began my “career” at the age of 15 working in my father’s bakery where his partner recognized my above average math skills and decided to put them to good use by teaching me accounting. From that point forward accounts receivable, payable and payroll were my responsbility.

Growing up in a family of self-made business people who didn’t go to college yet owned successful bakeries, restaurant chains and farms, the idea of college was absurd unless one wanted to become a doctor or lawyer. My passion was creative writing, math and computers and therefore college was “unnecessary”.

Eventually I moved beyond the bakery into positions with small companies who appreciated my talents and the on-the-job training I had acquired at a young age. From time to time I considered investing in a college degree in order to obtain higher paying jobs. I even enrolled in evening classes at the local community college, but more often than not I found myself in arguments with professors who weren’t able to think outside the box and I couldn’t envision myself applying their theories (or politics) to real world problems.

Please don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that college degrees are useless! I’m certain that for some people a structured college degree program is the key to success. I actually have found a great deal of value in college courses that are specific to something I want to achieve, and even greater value in web community based education. If you review my CV, you’ll see that I often am involved in a continuing education program.

My point is that if you can’t see value in the 25+ years of experience and accomplishments that I have achieved in a variety of business, hi-tech, and writing environments, and are ready to discount me because I lack that piece of paper that is precious in your culture, then I think it’s best that you close this window right now. I only take on clients and work that I know I’ll be successful with. Good luck to you.
